Have you been up to the Cascades Female Factory recently? Perhaps you still think of it as “The place where they make the fudge?”
For far too long, the mens’ convict story has been told down at Port Arthur (and told very well). Port Arthur is the place to visit on a trip to Tasmania. The Cascades Female Factory has been sadly overlooked and under-resourced over the years. This is not to undermine the valiant work been done by so many, in particular the Female Factory Historic Site Ltd. and their many volunteers.
At the end of 2010 the site received World Heritage status and in January of 2012 the site was taken over by Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA). Wonderful new staff have been taken on, initiatives like Her Story have been created and most of the band of faithful volunteers have stayed to help bring the site into a new life.
With funding found to re-construct the remaining Yards, the site is still a work in progress but a very exciting one.
Come up and have a look.
