National History Curriculum

With the new national History Curriculum focusing on Australian history for our Primary Middle school grades our production of The Old School is really coming into its own.

Today The Old School lived again through New Town Primary’s 2 Grade 3 classes.  Rather than go to their school and convert a classroom into a space resembling something from the 19th century, the location of the school meant students could simply walk over to the St John’s complex. There, we had the use of the old Sunday School’s convict -built sandstone building.

Stephen Hughes and his wife Maria  ran the New Town State School from 1862 – 1888.

Today their lives were re-lived as the old school bell rang out again.  On being questioned afterwards, the children all agreed that “it’s better now and we are glad we don’t get the cane!” (by  the way nobody did get the cane on the day it was only suggested!)
